Holiday Mixed Feelings

Here at Allaire Village the Holidays are always a bittersweet time of the year. On the one hand, we have our some of our favorite events including Christmas at Allaire and Lantern Tours, on the other end it signals the end of season. During the cold winter months our volunteers and staff put aside their bonnets and waistcoats while the Village recuperates and plans for the new season. The Village reopens every year in February, for our first event: George Washington’s Birthday Celebration!

Also, if you haven’t already seen it- Allaire Village was featured in an episode of Driving Jersey! They did a beautiful job, be sure to check out their website!

The season’s not quite over yet! The Village is decorated with beautiful 19th-century inspired decorations, the Bakery and General Store are open during the week for Holiday shopping, and we have one more night of Lantern Tours this Saturday! Here’s some info on our final two events this weekend! (Click for a larger image)

19th Century Baking: A Photo Narrative

Hello again, Blogosphere

It is another gorgeous afternoon at the Village making me once again wish I was outside. I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to last week’s Historical Book Recommendations in celebration of Nat’l Library Week. We had a lot of recommendations so I’ll be including some in the posts to come. This Sunday was our 19th Century Bee Hive Baking Event. The weather was thankfully lovely and we had a pretty good turnout. I’ve decided that instead of boring you with a long summary, I’d let the pictures speak for themselves. (For those of you that want more info on the event, click here)

The little darling on the left tried to give me a hug. It did not end well.

Ta dah!!!

Everybody loves bread!

Thanks to all volunteers and staff who helped out and all visitors that stopped by! Our next event is this Saturday: Early 19th Century Spring Festival!

Since there’s quite a few book recommendations left I figured I’d include the remaining recommendations throughout other posts. (Because reading doesn’t have to be celebrated for just one week!) Marissa, our resident artist and volunteer suggests in addition to The Count of Monte Cristo:

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy: Published in 1905 this is considered the classic adventure novel. Set during the French Revolution, Marguerite Blakeney, a French actress is caught up into the mystery of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Little does she know the identity of the elusive English spy might be someone closer than she thinks.

Spring has sprung! (We hope)

Indeed it has, blogosphere! This warm weather came out of nowhere, but by no means are we complaining! For the past couple of weeks Allaire Village has been experiencing some gorgeous weather and we’re hoping the snow is gone for good! Sunday it’s supposed to be 80 degrees! :O (Although this might be considered global warming, not spring) Here at Allaire we’re ecstatic to get our Spring season kicked off with popular events like Bee-Hive Oven Baking Day, our 19th Century Spring Festival, and The Wedding of Maria Allaire. (The daughter of James P.) Be sure to check out our calendar for more upcoming events!

Spring is also a time when our volunteers and interpreters  shed their cloaks/stop huddling by the fire and are able to:

Cider press,*

quilt,*

stop sleeping in class, :/

"I love spring!"

and frolic!

Of course now I’ve probably jinxed us. Stay away, snow, you’re not wanted here!

Over and out,

Hannah
